What it is

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply membrane heat-welded at the seams. It's white or light grey, reflects heat well, and handles UV without degrading.

When to use it

  • New flat roofs over plywood or insulation.
  • Reroofing existing flat membrane or bitumen roofs.
  • Roofs where heat reflection matters — north-facing, unshaded, or with HVAC plant on the deck.

TPO roofing — common questions

  • Is TPO roofing better than torch-on?
    Different tools for different jobs. TPO's heat-welded seams and reflective surface suit most new commercial flat roofs and many residential ones; torch-on still earns its place on roofs with heavy foot traffic or complex detailing. MRS specifies by the roof — substrate, fall and use — not by fashion.
  • Can you install TPO over an existing roof?
    Often yes, after a site inspection. Where the substrate is sound, a re-roof in TPO over a tired bitumen or membrane roof is frequently the right call. If the deck is failing underneath, MRS will say so rather than lay a new membrane over a problem.
  • How long does a TPO roof last?
    MRS installs Enviroclad TPO (Viking Roofspec) with a 20-year manufacturer warranty on the membrane, plus a 5-year MRS workmanship warranty. Service life depends on correct substrate prep and install — done to spec, it's a long-term flat-roof system.
  • Why are TPO's welded seams an advantage?
    On most flat roofs the seam is the weakest point. TPO seams are hot-air welded into a continuous, monolithic surface — there are no adhesives at the joints to fail — so the usual failure point becomes the strongest part of the roof. MRS probe-tests seams before flood-testing.
  • Do you install TPO outside Auckland?
    Auckland is MRS's base and standard service area, but MRS takes commercial and multi-residential TPO work across New Zealand — past projects include Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Otago Boys High School.
